Rational decision making for the "short shorts" complaint

Introduction and problem identification (MGMT-11)

In this case, the waitresses have lodged complaints regarding their new uniforms, which are more revealing compared to their previous attire. While the new uniforms appear to be effective in attracting customers, they have created unfavorable working conditions for the waitresses.

There are several relevant points in this case. First, the waitresses are required to wear new uniforms that are more revealing than their previous attire. Second, waitresses complain about the new uniforms, it suggests that they found the attire uncomfortable. Third, the new uniforms have proven successful in their intended purpose of attracting customers. Last, the waitresses' complaints show that the uniforms have affected their overall experience and job satisfaction.

This case reveals the conflict between the success of the new uniforms in attracting customers and the negative impact they have on the waitresses' working conditions.


Decision criteria 

When evaluate the decision that I made, the following criteria are taken into consideration with different level of importance:

1. Employee comfort and safety (high)

Assess the level of comfort and safety provided by the new uniforms, considering that the uniforms should not pose any physical discomfort or hazards to the waitresses while performing their duties.

2. Compliance with legal and ethical standards (high)

Ensure the uniform policy is legal and ethical, as well as do not violate any employee rights.

3. Customer perception and brand image (medium)

Evaluate the impact of the uniforms on customers perception, consider whether the new uniforms align with the desired brand image.

4. Consistency and equality (high)

Evaluate whether the uniform policy is consistent and fair for all employees without  discrimination.

5. Employee morale and retention (medium)

Consider the waitresses' feelings about the uniforms and whether they negatively affect their job satisfaction and commitment to the organization.


Alternative solutions

1. Working with the waitress to modify the design of the uniforms while still maintaining the desired aesthetic.

2. Allowing waitresses to wear additional layers to provide more coverage while still maintaining a consistent look.

3. Gathering customer feedback through surveys to gauge their preferences regarding the waitstaff uniforms. 


Alternative evaluation

On the one hand, implementing customer surveys is an effective way to get insight of whether the more revealing uniforms are truly a determine factor in attracting customers. On the other hand, adjusting the uniform design with employees could address the waitresses' concerns about the uniforms, creating a comfortable working environment. Furthermore, allowing waitress to wear additional layers is an approach of promoting employee well-being. Overall, creating a comfortable working environment and promoting employee well-being are important than getting feedback from customers.


The best alternative

As far as I am concerned, allowing waitresses to wear additional layers is the best alternative for two reasons. Firstly, it can reduce negative impact on waitresses instantly. Secondly, it can avoid the cost of redesigning and producing uniforms, as well as the cost of conducting customer survey.
